Since Big Sur resides further away than Carmel and Monterey it becomes less accessible to visitors. The area offers low cell phone connectivity coupled with limited lodging alternatives and reduced dining establishments.

So try to book before starting your journey. The journey takes 45 to 60 minutes so it provides both convenience and scenic beauty. Travelers along the coastal highway can find various designated viewpoints to appreciate breathtaking ocean panoramas.

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway, Villa Mara is a top choice. It’s an adults-only boutique hotel, just steps from the ocean. With only 16 rooms, the experience feels exclusive which features chic interiors and elevated boutique design.

This newly refreshed hotel has a cottage-core aesthetic and is located in the heart of downtown. The two locations are minutes apart which offers a stylish and intimate stay with charming interiors and modern comforts.

Waking up to the sound of crashing waves and panoramic ocean views is pure magic in Carmel. During my stay at The Lodge at Pebble Beach, I was mesmerized by the coastal scenery and world-class amenities impeccable service, fine dining, and, of course, its legendary golf course.

For a more intimate retreat, Bernardus Lodge & Spa in nearby Carmel Valley was pure bliss. Nestled among rolling vineyards, it offered luxurious spa treatments, private fireplaces, and incredible farm-to-table dining.

If you’re looking for oceanfront luxury, La Playa Carmel is another must-visit, blending historic charm with breathtaking Pacific views. Whether it’s sipping wine by an infinity pool or strolling private coastal pathways, Carmel’s luxury stays redefine indulgence.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you’re looking for.

  • Spring (March–May) – Mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and blooming flowers make this a perfect time for hiking, wine tasting, and scenic coastal drives.
  • Summer (June–August) – The busiest season, with sunny days and lively events. However, morning fog (June Gloom) can roll in, especially along the coast. Book accommodations early!
  • Fall (September–November) – Considered the best time to visit, with warm weather, fewer tourists, and the clearest ocean views. Great for outdoor dining, beach walks, and wine country tours.
  • Winter (December–February) – A peaceful and romantic time with cozy boutique stays, dramatic coastal waves, and festive holiday lights. Occasional rain, but still a magical escape.

For perfect weather and fewer crowds, September and October are the ideal months to explore Carmel’s charm!

  • Walkable Downtown: Once in Carmel, you won’t need a car to explore the charming downtown area everything is within walking distance, from art galleries and boutiques to wine-tasting rooms and cafés.
  • Electric Bikes & Scooters: If you want a fun and eco-friendly way to explore, renting an electric bike or scooter is a great option for getting around town and riding along the scenic 17-Mile Drive.
  • Rideshare & Taxis: Uber and Lyft are available but can be limited, especially at night. Local taxis and hotel shuttles can also be an option for short trips.
  • Parking Tips: Carmel has free street parking, but it fills up quickly, especially on weekends. Arriving early or using public lots can save you time.

Having a car gives you the freedom to visit nearby attractions like Monterey, Pebble Beach, and Point Lobos State Reserve, but if you’re staying within the town, walking is the best way to soak in Carmel’s storybook charm!

  • From San Francisco – It’s a short 2-hour drive down the scenic Highway 1 or US-101.
  • From Los Angeles – Expect a 5+ hour drive, making it a perfect weekend road trip.
  • By Air – The closest airport is Monterey Regional Airport (MRY), but it has limited flights. Alternatively, you can fly into San Jose (SJC), Oakland (OAK), or San Francisco (SFO) and drive to Carmel.
